This two-day course is aimed at veterinarians with intermediate surgical experience seeking to improve their knowledge and skills in thoracic surgery. The course will focus on the diagnosis, clinical decision-making and surgical therapy of common chest cavity conditions, including pyothorax, pulmonary and pericardial disease. Participants will learn to perform lateral thoracotomy, sternotomy, pericardectomy, pulmonary lobectomy, as well as master the application of chest drain and thoracocentesis.

Programme:

Day 1:
09:00-11:00 Theory: Anatomy, anesthetic techniques, thoracocentesis and thoracic drain placement
11:00-11:15 Break
11:15-12:00 Wet Lab: Thoracentesis & Thoracic Drain Placement
12:00-13:00 Lunch (included)
13:00-14:30 Theory: Approaches to the chest cavity; closure techniques
14:30-16:45 Wet-Lab: Lateral thoracotomy, sternotomy; thoracic exploration

Day 2:
08:00-09:30 Theory: Pericardial disease; Pericardectomy & Pulmonary lobectomy
09:30-11:00 Wet Lab: Pericardiectomy
11:00-11:15 Break
11:15-12:30 Wet-Lab: Lung lobectomy
12:30 – 13:30 Lunch (included)
13:30-15:45 Wet-Lab: PDA ligation, pyothorax, etc.

Will graduated from the Royal Veterinary College in 2010 and has since worked in multiple small animal hospitals across the UK whilst also completing a rotating internship at Willows in 2012. He completed his surgical training (ECVS residency) and clinical masters degree (MSc) at Bristol Veterinary School in 2019, after which he returned to Willows where he currently heads up the Soft Tissue Surgery department. He became a European Specialist (Diplomate ECVS) in 2020. Will is an extremely knowledgeable clinician with a breadth of surgical experience and we are delighted for him to joint our team of instructors. At work he enjoys thoracic emergency surgery and has been teaching workhops for vets for many years.
