Cardiology Step by Step – Modular Course

Open

Our modular course in small animal cardiology is designed to guide you step by step from the very basics to confident clinical decision-making. Whether you are just starting with cardiac diagnostics or looking to strengthen your existing skills, this program offers a structured and practical learning experience focused on dogs and cats.

Weekend 1 – Foundations of Cardiac Ultrasound
This first weekend is designed to give you a confident start in echocardiography. You will become familiar with the ultrasound machine, understand its core functions and settings, and begin developing the hands-on technique needed to acquire good quality images. By the end of the weekend, you will have a solid grounding in the fundamental principles of echocardiography and a clear framework for using diagnostic ultrasound as part of your clinical toolkit.

Weekend 2 – Building Confidence and Diagnostic Depth
In this second weekend, we consolidate what you have already learned before pushing further. We revisit core scanning techniques to reinforce good habits, then progressively introduce more advanced echocardiographic methods. You will begin to develop the skills needed to critically interpret your images, recognise normal variation, and identify the early signs of cardiac pathology.

Weekend 3 – Bringing It All Together: Echo, ECG, and Clinical Reasoning
The third weekend marks an important step: integrating everything into real clinical thinking. We introduce the very fundamentals of ECG interpretation, refresh key clinical examination findings, and then bring it all together through interactive case-based sessions. Working through cases that combine echocardiographic data, ECG findings, and clinical signs, you will practise the kind of structured reasoning that underpins confident cardiology in everyday practice.

Frane graduated in veterinary medicine from the Vetsuisse faculty of the University of Zurich, Switzerland, in 2015. After initially working in the private sector and as a Swiss army vet, he started his doctoral thesis in small animal cardiology at the University of Zurich in the area of cardiovascular effects of physical activity in sporting dogs. In 2017, he started a rotational internship with specialty focus in cardiology, which led him in 2018 to the ECVIM-CA specialisation programme (cardiology), which was successfully completed in 2022. Frane then started working as a freelance cardiologist in several centres in Switzerland, offering on-site consultations in the French- and German-speaking regions and in the canton of Ticino, through his company 'VetMeister'. In April 2022, he served for six months at the University of Zurich in the Department of Endocrinology, acquiring further advanced knowledge in the field of endocrinology, while continuing to develop his Freelancer activity. From January 2023 Frane restarted the cardiology service at the University of Glasgow, taking the reins as head of service and participating in various areas of comparative research with the aim of further developing the range of services offered.
